Both digital and brand design are ways of using graphic design skills to make people feel and experience something. Digital design is applied to any kind of digital product, like a website, an app or a piece of digital content. Brand design deals with logos, a brand’s name, color palette, typefaces and more. It’s that simple, and we’ll teach you both.

Development is what you’d commonly hear referred to as ‘coding,’ but there’s more to it. It’s how we bring design to life through the latest technology and make sure that it can stand on solid ground as something usable, interactive and exciting,  but it’s also how we shape the future of digital experiences. Development can be anything you dream up, and we can help you learn any language or program you’re interested in.

Also known as User Experience, UX is exactly what it sounds like. It paves the groundwork for development and design to be brought to life in a digital interface. Great UX improves everything from layout to navigation, information architecture, checkout on an ecommerce site and much, much more. UX is how we make sure technology is responding to the needs of people, as opposed to the other way around.

Being a producer in the world of creative agencies means wrangling designers, developers, timelines, budgets and resources to turn the wants and needs of our clients and their audiences into magical and inspiring products. Producers are subject matter experts who think ahead (and on the fly) to adapt the way we approach projects in order to get the best out of the entire agency and keep clients happy and informed.

Strategy is usually the first step in our process. It’s how we ensure that the people who pay us for our work feel understood, and, in turn, the people who buy or use their products are delighted. Every brand and project is different, and we use strategy to make sure that we’re immersed in and impassioned about those differences so we can tell incredible stories and turn challenges into opportunities. Strategists are communicators and mediators.

Strategists can write, but copywriters are writers. Copy, as we call it, is the act of turning our partners’ ideas and values into words that regular people can understand. Good copy makes visions come to life and abstract ideas feel exciting. Great copy happens when we create something that’s not only clear but also memorable. Copy isn’t always glamorous, world-renowned taglines, but it’s always fun.

High5 is an exciting one-on-one mentorship program for young minds in digital and brand design, development, UX, production, strategy, copywriting and beyond.

High5 is currently remote, and we’ll be meeting and mentoring via Google Meet (We do a lot of work with Google. Pretty cool, huh?). Our student mentees will first have a getting-to-know-you session with their mentors, where their goals and interests and preferences will be talked through. From there, we’ll set up scheduled Meets and progress through a light lesson plan that covers a discipline or a few disciplines from the basics through to the harder stuff. We’ll provide tools that are needed–whether it’s access to programs or physical equipment–to get mentees ready for their next big leap. We’ll also be available to chat throughout the week and answer questions, provide insights or give advice whenever we’re needed. We want our mentees to feel empowered, educated, supported and excited, because it really *shouldn't*  be scary out there in the real world, but sometimes it is. Not at Use All Five, though.

It's our hope that by the time our High5 graduates have hit the scene, our industry will be different than it is today, but the way it is today is why we're here now. The whole truth is that while design and technology might be more progressive than the world-at-large, none of the above are doing enough to unearth and guide the best and brightest. Probably because it's easier to fish a stocked pond than it is to fish the ocean–if you get our drift. Access begets opportunity, which begets more opportunity, which becomes experience, which becomes money, money turns into power, and so on and so on. When access is only given to the expected few, everything incredible that comes after is virtually forbidden to those on the outside looking in.

We're a small studio, and we can't tear down the entire system, but we can acknowledge and act on the privilege that opportunity has afforded us in order to create opportunity for others, and the best way that we know to do that is by freely sharing expertise and helping to set foundations. High5 is meant to bust down the carefully guarded walls surrounding digital and brand design, web development, UX, strategy and beyond–inviting in people who deserve access to that know-how but just haven't been given it yet. Think of it as a free, practical, hands-on college-level course without the b*^&$!t and bluster, without the ivory tower, the grades or the inequities.
